Legend has it that more than 1,700 years ago, a young woman donned a wreath of candles, freeing her hands to carry much needed food and water to persecuted Christians hiding in Roman catacombs. The candles served to light her way into the darkness. Her name was Lucia, derived from the Latin word lux which means “light”. Today we recognize her as Saint Lucy, or Santa Lucia, and we celebrate her during the Festival of Light which leads us into the heart of Advent as we prepare to welcome Christ. The feast of Santa Lucia holds special meaning for our family and so we chose her as our namesake for our candle–making journey. Just as she led the way into the darkness with her candles, we hope ours serve you, to light up your space and bring warmth to your home in every season.

Candle making first began as a fun craft to do with my children. We became enamored with the idea that we could build our own candle experience and scent profiles using quality ingredients that I knew were safe to have in our home. We knew beeswax was the best option for its non-toxic qualities and ability to clean the air, but we quickly discovered that candle making was not so simple. As a homeschooling family, we found it to be a great way to conduct experiments and learn all about the science behind quality candles.

This introduction to candles quickly turned into a passion project, and so came to life Santa Lucia Candles, our family-owned company dedicated to making pure beeswax candles with only the safest essential oils and fragrances.
